The short version
Open lapping days are crowded, and crowded is the enemy of both learning and enjoyment. You spend the session in traffic, catching people, being caught, and never stringing three clean laps together.
There are two ways around that. Buy the whole track, or buy a day where the grid is capped low enough that the track in front of you is genuinely clear.

A non-lapping date with a hard cap on entries. Far cheaper than private hire, and the track is still empty in front of you.
